Compare the color and Black and White images. Which colors translate to darker shades? Which colors translate to lighter tones? What Observations can be made about the warm and cool hues?
Compare the two images. How are they similar? How are they different? How are the illusions created using lines or marks and what are the illusions? What do you see? How do you feel after staring at it for an extended time?
Write down what you know about this image. How were the marks made and with what? What can you see in the image and what is the medium? What is the subject matter and why would the artist create this? Click on the images to learn more. Using a pen, In your sketchbooks (or blank sheet of paper) explore mark making. you may split the page into areas or work from one area out but you goal is to fill up the page while creating depth and value using only lines.
Using the back of your coloring sheet write a letter to me. In this letter I want to know what you want to learn about this year. What is a skill you have always wanted to learn? How would you define Art and what is a medium? Why is art important? Who defines art? If these questions only lead to more questions, add them to the letter as well. If you finish before I start the class discussion doodle or flip the sheet over and continue coloring. This is a SILENT exercise.
