Optical Art uses lines and contrast, two Elements of art, to create optical illusions.
Op Art found its height of popularity in the mid 1960's. Most Op art is black and white for the high contrast that creates the optical illusions of bulging spheres and forms. Victor Vasarely is considered the father of the Op art movement and is probably the most recognizable artist. Op Art was one of the many movements that sprung up as a result of world war, technological advances in image capturing and an existential philosophy that lead artists to really question what art was.
